The
Internet: More than the World Wide Web
Often people think
of the Internet as the World Wide Web. Be assured it is much more than
that. I will leave an in depth description of the workings if the internet
to others .
The beauty of the
Internet does not lie only in that you can set up an attractive Web site
to show off your "wares" to everyone in the world. The value
lies in its' accessibility .
The Internet uses
Internet Protocol (IP) and other standard technologies so that all
computers can communicate using a simple browser interface on the desk
top. It relies on thousands of computers or servers operating together
sharing responsibility . So although a particular server may malfunction
, services are redundant and instantly redirected offering a very reliable
form of communication and networking.
Web pages and sites
are only one use of the Internet. There are ftp sites for downloading
large amounts of information,Virtual Private Networks for creating
company wide networking, Java for sending out applications to desktops
and much , much more.
It is important that
as you develop new in-house systems and applications for your company
that you consider the various ways that you may want to share information
with others. It is crucial that you implement processes that can be migrated
to the Internet and shared with others in your business network.
The Internet provides
an easy way to share, communicate and collaborate with others. Something
we in the Construction Industry need to do daily.
